Artist’s Statement
Andrew Hinton in his Deptford studio, 2024.
I am a multimedia artist. My practice has manifest as musical composition, film, performance and visual art. My work is a response to the physical world, playing with the history embedded in objects.
I collect objects, materials and ideas to use as a palette of possibilities. I gather the things to make marks, make marks with and make marks on. Time spent in Cape Cornwall and on Dungeness provides a rich source of material.
Often this process gives over control of the imagery to the materials themselves. Early work concentrated on composition and recordings are coming back into use now as I experiment with film again. I respond to the work of others that I feel has given me a new way to look.
Often an image in an exhibition or one rediscovered in a family archive will start a new group. There is also an underlying element of self-reflection.
My work is a response to the physical world, playing with the history embedded in objects.
